The IZSAM is taking part in the working group in order to map out the Campania Region

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” (IZSAM) is participating with working group for the analysis of the data collected in order to map out the Campania Region, also called la “Terra dei Fuochi”.

In compliance with the legislative decree of the 10th December 2013: “Disposizioni urgenti dirette a fronteggiare emergenze ambientali e industriali ed a favorire lo sviluppo delle aree interessate” (“Urgent provisions in order to face environmental and industrial emergences and allow the development of the areas of interest”), the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Health, signed a Directive concerning the technical investigations in order to map out the land of the Campania Region, which are designated for agricultural use.

The objective of the mapping process, which will be carried out through remote sensing instruments, is to verify the presence of environmental contaminants in the ground due to illegal waste disposal through burning or dumping of radioactive and toxic waste.

The investigations were entrusted to the Agricultural Research Council(CRA), the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), the National Institute of Health (ISS) and the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of the Campania Region (ARPAC), which can consult with the Environmental Operations Task Force (Nucleo Operativo Ecologico dei Carabinieri - NOA), recently named Command for Environmental Protection, the State forestry Corps, the agricultural policy unit of the Carabinieri and other bodies of the Italian State.

According to Article 1 of the Directive, data and information will be shared with other involved bodies “also through the information system of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise, which is used to collect information and execute the procedures for the classification and registration of the land under inquiry”.

Among the participants of the working group, there are the representatives of the IZS of Abruzzo and Molise Regions, the CRA, the ISPRA, the ISS, the Italian Agency for Agricultural Supplies (AGEA), the Campania Region, the ARPAC, the Institute of Campania and Calabria Regions (IZSM) and the University Federico II of Naples.
