IZSAM was recognized by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) as Reference Laboratory for CBPP (RL) following the incursion of the disease in Italy in 1990 and its eradication in 1993. On the basis of the mandate, the tasks of the RL may be summarized as it follows:
- standardization and harmonization of diagnostic tests used to confirm disease outbreaks (Complement Fixation Test, ELISA, PCR and MmmSC isolation and characterization);
- planning research and development of innovative diagnostic tests and immunizing products;
- organization of or participation to interlaboratory tests (ring trails) aimed to validate new diagnostic tests and to assess and monitor performance of diagnostic test in use;
- promoting the establishment of networks with other RL or with National Laboratories in Countries where the disease is present;
- contributing to the revision of the Manual of Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals and Terrestrial Animal Health Code as required by WOAH ;
- promoting and implementing of the Quality Assurance System of Laboratories, concerning diagnostic test related to the pathogen;
- training of personnel of Veterinary Laboratories engaged in the control and eradication of CBPP;
- providing consultancy to WOAH, FAO and other international Institutions.
