In Teramo for the safety of fish products in the Adriatic sea

On Thursday the 29th of May, an inter-sessional seminar will be held in Teramo. It fits into the activities of  “CAPS2 - Strengthening of Centres for Aquaculture production and Safety surveillance in Adriatic Cross-border Countries”, a triennial European project co-financed with more than 3 million euros by the European Union through the IPA Adriatic Cross Border Cooperation 2007-2013 Framework Programme.

The seminar will be held at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” (IZSAM) in the convention room of the International Centre for Veterinary Training and Information (CIFIV). As a project partner, IZSAM is involved in the communication and training activities of the technical staff on the methods of analysis and the application of the georeferencing computer technology via web.

The CAPS2 project, which commenced in Teramo on December 2012, is giving continuity to the previous initiative CAPS1 aiming at strengthening the Centre for Aquaculture production and Safety surveillance of Split, in Croatia. The CAPS2 activities, involving most of the bordering countries of the Adriatic Sea, focus on the analysis and management of new chemical and microbiological contamination risks.

Through this project, the partners, coming from Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania, are adapting their equipment and acquiring new competences in order to strengthen the diagnostic capabilities and knowledge concerning the chemical and microbiological contaminants, which could represent a risk for the safety of food and fish products.

The project aims to contribute to the improvement of surveillance and controls on sea and aquaculture products, for a common quality standard level in food safety to finally benefit citizens of the Adriatic Area and to promote the harmonization process and application of the European Union legislation.

The seminar, preceded by the Steering Committee meeting held on the 27th and 28th of May, will serve to take stock of the situation since the project began, to divulge the objectives and results achieved and present the intermediate activities. Apart from the aforementioned delegates and project partners coming Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and IZSAM, some experts of the Ministry of Health, the National Institute of Health (ISS), the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), were invited to take part to the event.
