On September 7, the Institute participated in Brussels to the meeting of the General Directorate for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE)-European Commission to discuss the draft guidelines on animals welfare during transport.
The meeting mastered by Denis Simonen, theEuropean Commission official expert and attended by about forty stakeholders from different European countries, provided clarifications on the objectives, opportunities and limits of the Animal Transport Guides project.
After a plenary meeting the participants were broke out in subgroups, depending on the animal species of interest, to discuss the draft guides for cattle, poultry and horses. Dr. Francesca Lombardo (IZSAM Human-Animal Relationship and Animal Welfare Laboratory) has participated as discussion leader at the workshop on horse transport.
The Animal Transport Guides pilot project managed by DG SANTE was launched in May 2015 and lasts three years. It aims to develop and communicate the best practices for animal transport that will be included in the species-specific guidelines that are expected by the end of 2016.
