The Abruzzo-Molise Apennines boasts the presence of three national parks, a regional park and about 40 regional and state oases and reserves, to the point that we can speak of a true protection system of European interest. One-third of the Institute's reference territory is under environmental protection: for this reason, too, environmental defense is a priority activity.

The Institute’s commitment to environmental protection is also rooted in the unique natural heritage of the Abruzzo-Molise Apennines, home to three national parks, one regional park and around forty regional and state-managed nature reserves and protected areas. In total, almost one third of the Institute’s reference territory is subject to environmental protection, forming a true conservation system of European significance.

The Institute’s researchers contribute to environmental safeguarding through a radioactivity monitoring system, which analyses foodstuffs of both animal and plant origin collected from across the territory. This activity began in 1986 following the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Monitoring the presence and levels of environmental contaminants is of particular importance during emergencies involving pollution or other incidents that pose serious risks to food safety and ecosystems.

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise also supports the country’s sustainable development by protecting biodiversity through wildlife conservation projects and by monitoring water quality. Regular marine biology surveys allow researchers to assess the health of the central Adriatic Sea and its fish stocks, contributing to more balanced and sustainable fisheries management.

Mycotoxins, Plant Toxins and Marine Biotoxins

The unit is responsible for the analytical determination of mycotoxins and plant toxins in food intended for human consumption and animal feed, as well as marine biotoxins and other toxins in fishery products. In response to the growing concern over environmental contamination by microplastics, the unit has established a dedicated analytical section focused on the characterisation of these substances in food products, using advanced instrumental analysis techniques.

Contaminants and Pesticide Residues

The unit conducts analyses of pesticide residues, inorganic contaminants, and trace elements in food and feed, along with the detection of process contaminants and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). It also operates as the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants in food for human and animal consumption, carrying out specialised monitoring and analysis in this critical area.

Animal Breeding and Experimental Studies

The Animal Breeding and Experimental Research Unit provides technical support for activities related to basic and applied scientific research, implementing experimental procedures based on the 3Rs principles: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement. The Unit collaborates with public and private institutional partners involved in both medical and veterinary research. Animal welfare principles guide all activities within the Unit, which offers its expertise to support research projects and contribute to the activities of the IZS Teramo Centres of Excellence, specifically the EU Reference Centre for the Welfare of Ruminants and Equines and the WOAH Collaborating Centre for Animal Welfare.

Food Chemistry and Drug Residues

The Unit conducts analyses to detect residues of pharmacologically active substances in animal-derived products intended for human consumption and veterinary drugs in animal feed. Its activities also include the monitoring of chemical additives in food and feed, the assessment of composition and preservation status, the detection of toxic substances in cases of suspected animal poisoning, and the monitoring of veterinary medicines available on the market.

Aquatic Biology

Research and experimentation activities on aquatic ecosystems to promote environmental protection, animal health, and public health within a One Health framework. Conducting ecotoxicological tests in aquatic ecosystems. The Laboratory serves as the Reference Laboratory for the Abruzzo Region in the field of professional and recreational fishing and aquaculture, as established by Regional Law No. 28 of 27 April 2017 concerning the management of fish fauna and the regulation of fishing in inland waters.

Animal Welfare

The primary objective of the Unit is to enhance activities in the field of animal welfare, a key element for ensuring the sustainability of livestock production and improving the management of stray animals. Additionally, the Unit aims to embed environmental sustainability and circular economy principles into its core activities, with the ambition of establishing the Institute as a reference point in these priority areas.

Chemical Food and Environmental Safety

The Laboratory is primarily engaged in the detection of residues, contaminants, and chemical additives in food and feed, as well as in assessing their composition and preservation status. The laboratory also conducts research and experimental activities for the development of new analytical methods applied to food products, with a focus on evaluating the potential risks of human exposure to chemical contaminants and residues. Additionally, it participates in technical assistance programmes to support third countries.
