The Avezzano local branch serves the largest province in the Abruzzo region and is located in the heart of the area with the highest concentration of protected zones in the region. For this reason, its diagnostic activity focuses primarily on wildlife, particularly regarding necropsy diagnostics.

Among its institutional duties, serological testing is especially relevant within national eradication programmes for sheep, goats, and cattle (brucellosis and leukosis), and within control plans for equines (equine infectious anaemia) and swine (Aujeszky’s disease). This latter activity is carried out on behalf of all territorial branches in both the Abruzzo and Molise regions.

The branch also plays a key role in supporting meat hygiene and safety controls through trichinella testing in meat from domestic animals and game (wild boar). Its work is rounded out by diagnostic services provided to support local livestock farms and private veterinary practitioners operating in the area.
