A multidisciplinary team of researchers engaged in the study of animal disease epidemiology, zoonotic diseases (those transmitted from animals to humans), and food contamination, with a focus on evaluating the associated risks to animal and human health. Through advanced techniques in data analysis, modelling, and the development of analytical procedures, the laboratory supports health authorities by providing essential information for selecting the most appropriate strategies for prevention and control.

The Epidemiology Laboratory is dedicated to developing and innovating methodologies for epidemiological analysis and risk assessment in the context of animal diseases, zoonotic diseases (those transmitted from animals to humans), food contamination, and emerging phenomena such as antimicrobial resistance mechanisms.

Recognised as the National Reference Centre for Veterinary Epidemiology, Planning, Information, and Risk Analysis, the laboratory is actively involved in the development of advanced and innovative epidemiological methods. It ensures the creation, standardisation, and promotion of procedures, protocols, and surveillance plans, along with the supporting information systems, while coordinating activities across the various structures involved in this field. Its work also aims to keep the information systems used by the Ministry of Health for managing health services at the forefront of technological advancement. The analysis of genomic data from pathogen characterisation adds an integrated approach to public health challenges.

The laboratory is actively engaged in the dissemination of findings from its epidemiological studies and risk analyses and provides training for veterinarians and public health professionals at both the national and international levels.

Statistical Sciences and GIS

The Department of Statistical Sciences and GIS applies advanced analytics, machine learning, and geographic information systems (GIS) to study the spread of animal diseases. By integrating genomic, epidemiological, and satellite data, it develops predictive models to identify at-risk areas and support containment strategies. Through a One Health approach, it transforms complex data into operational tools for zoonosis prevention, contributing to health surveillance and emergency management with innovative solutions.

Sample Reception and Quality Control

The Sample Reception and Quality Control Unit manages relationships with clients and the public, ensuring the provision of the Institute's diagnostic services in compliance with quality standards. The Unit is responsible for verifying incoming samples for analytical activities, recording them, forwarding them to the designated laboratories, and preparing test reports with the analytical results obtained.
