The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise (IZS) was the first public veterinary institution in Italy to achieve accreditation under international quality standards for laboratory testing in the fields of chemistry, microbiology, virology, and serology. Today, accreditation covers all diagnostic sections of the Institute.
The Institute’s diagnostic activities have been accredited and subjected to rigorous quality controls since 1995, three years ahead of the deadline set by the European Community. Article 3 of Directive 93/99/EEC of 29 October 1993, "Additional measures concerning the official control of foodstuffs", stipulated that by 1 November 1998: “Official laboratories conducting analyses on samples of products collected by inspection personnel shall operate in accordance with EN 45001, which sets out general requirements for the operation of testing laboratories, shall be assessed in accordance with EN 45002, and this assessment shall be carried out by bodies meeting the criteria established in EN 45003.”
The Institute opted not to limit the application of the Quality System to departments responsible for official food control but to extend it as a standard operating approach across all technical and scientific sectors. By implementing the requirements of ISO 17025, the Institute ensures continuous improvement in work organisation, the functioning of technical departments, the documentation of staff competence, and the reliability of results. This is achieved through participation in proficiency testing and the use of validated testing methods, safeguarding the integrity of data provided to clients.
Since 2004, the Institute's Training System has been certified by TÜV Italia as compliant with the requirements of ISO 9001 for "Analysis, design, delivery, and evaluation of specialised and managerial training and information activities in the healthcare sector, carried out using both traditional teaching methods and information and communication technologies." In January 2015, the Institute was officially recognised as a standard provider for Continuing Medical Education (CME), enabling the delivery of accredited training events, both in-person and via eLearning. Achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification for its training services in October 2016 made IZSAM one of the first healthcare organisations in Italy to successfully transition to the new standard, two years ahead of the 2018 deadline for certification under ISO 9001:2008.
