Born in Sant’Omero (Teramo) in 1956, Giacomo Migliorati graduated in veterinary medicine from the University of Bologna in 1982 and began his professional career in 1983 at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise. He became a veterinary assistant in 1990 and, in 1994, took on the responsibility of the Laboratory for Food of Animal Origin.
As head of the laboratory, he oversaw analytical controls on food products, coordinating testing activities for chemical and microbiological contaminants. His expertise was further strengthened through specialised training in the United States at the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, as well as through his teaching of Food Inspection at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of L’Aquila.
He took part in international meetings as an expert and delegate of the Ministry of Health, working on the equivalence of sanitary measures for the export of Italian products, particularly to the United States. His areas of work also included contaminants such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls, and pathogens including Campylobacter and Listeria monocytogenes.
He served as Acting Director General from 7 July to 2 August 2012 and held the position of Health Director in two periods: from 26 September 2012 to 3 July 2014, and again from February 2020, a role he continues to hold today.
