All the cattle recorded in the Register must possess an individual identification document called a Passport.

The Passport is issued by the Veterinary Service within 14 days of notification of the animal's entry in the Register by the rearer, but can also be printed, subject to prior authorization, by the Assistance Centre to which the rearer has delegated the entry of the information in the National DataBase.
Printing is carried out exclusively on numbered sheets issued by the State Polygraphic Institute.
The information relating to the animal's date of birth and its dam's identification code may be omitted for animals born before 1 January 1998.
The passport accompanies the animal on all its movements from one holding to another. Movements must be recorded on the back of the document.
