In Italy, the number of Dengue cases has risen to 625, with 173 of those being indigenous. In the Marche region, the main outbreak showed a 93% reduction in new cases reported over the past week.

During the first half of 2024, the confirmed cases of Dengue virus infection in Italy increased more than fivefold compared to the same period in 2023, and all cases were associated with international travel. ( ISS epicentro.iss.it/febbre-dengue/aggiornamenti ).

From 1st January to 8 October 2024, the national surveillance system confirmed 625 cases of Dengue, of which 452 were related to foreign travel and 173 indigenous, with a median age of 43 years, and no reported deaths. These data come from the weekly update of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS).

As of 1st October 2024, local transmission events of the Dengue virus (DENV) in Italy included:

- The main outbreak, with 102 confirmed cases of infection, all symptomatic, occurred in a municipality in the Marche region, relating to Dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2). Between 25 September and 1st October, a 93% decrease in cases was observed compared to the previous week (18-24 September). This trend will be further monitored in the coming weeks.

- Sporadic cases and small outbreaks of autochthonous DENV infections (types 1, 2, and 3) were reported in Lombardy, Veneto, Abruzzo and Tuscany. Epidemiological investigations up to 1st October 2024 highlighted links between these cases or with those in the Marche region.

Another smaller outbreak (36 confirmed cases, involving DENV-2) was identified in a municipality in the Emilia-Romagna region, and epidemiological investigations are ongoing. Currently, there is no microbiological evidence linking these cases to the Marche outbreak.

In all areas where locally transmitted cases were identified, mosquito control measures (targeting the Aedes genus) and preventive measures to guarantee the safety of transfusions and transplants were immediately activated, as outlined in the “ National Plan for the Prevention, Surveillance, and Response to Arbovirus (PNA) 2020-2025 ”.

Other Arbovirus Infections – From 1st January to 8 October 2024, the following cases were reported:

- 6 confirmed cases of Zika virus (all travel-related, median age 49 years, no deaths);

- 14 confirmed cases of Chikungunya (all travel-related, median age 49 years, no deaths);

- 45 confirmed cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) (43 locally acquired, 2 travel-related, median age 54 years, 2 deaths);

- 82 confirmed cases of Toscana virus infection (all locally acquired, median age 53.5 years, no deaths).

Further investigations, including viral genome sequencing, are ongoing to confirm the possible origins of the observed cases.

For further information, refer to the dashboard (note: the dashboard includes only data on Dengue, Chikungunya, TBE, and Toscana virus; for Zika virus, the limited number of cases observed (≤5) does not provide detailed information to guarantee patient privacy).
