International activities

The globalization of animal and food trade is a trigger element in the observed increase of the risk of infectious diseases spread. The study of disease transmission, therefore, cannot be limited within the national borders, but needs for a more global and international context. COVEPI is working to strengthen its relationships with the international Organizations, like OIE, FAO and WHO as well as to reinforce the collaboration with other national Institutions in other countries, in particular in Europe (including Eastern countries and Caucasus) and in the whole Mediterranean basin.

Bioinformatics

Nowadays the development of competencies and skills in the field of spatio-temporal analysis of the distribution of pathogen genotypes and distinct genetic populations is a crucial requirement for better understanding the spread and the evolution of infectious diseases. Hence, COVEPI is working on a multiannual programme to establish a proper centre for Genomic Epidemiology.

Reference role at national level

COVEPI is well aware of its national role and it is firmly convinced to promote a wider ‘epidemiological culture” in the country, taking benefits from the collaboration with the Regional Veterinary Epidemiology Centres.
