Training course on animal welfare in pig production

 

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” (IZSAM) is organizing a training course from the 14th to the 17th of October 2014 in Hering, Denmark on “Animal welfare in pig production”. The training course is financed by the Consumers, Health and Food Executive Agency (CHAFEA) of the European Commission within the framework of the Better Training for Safer Food Initiative promoted by DG SANCO.

 

The training course on animal welfare in pig production is addressed to the official veterinarians of the EU Member States, candidate countries and several third countries. The 54 delegates taking part to the event will come from Austria, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, The-Former-Yugoslav-Republic-of-Macedonia, the UK, Vietnam.

 

Delegates of the European Commission, the World Organization for Animal Health, the National Competent Authorities for Denmark, Spain, Sweden, as well as EFSA delegates will participate in the event through recorded video speeches. Teachers from Universities and international Research Institutes will carry out face-to-face lessons, exercises and discussions in groups or in plenary sessions following the didactic program. The University of Aarhus cooperated with IZSAM in order to implement the event.

 

The learning methodology used aims at facilitating the development of the necessary competencies to interpret relevant EU legislation, apply the main scientific concepts for proper housing management of pigs at farms; monitor and control animal welfare by reaffirming how important a strong cooperation between competent authorities and stakeholders in the production chain can be to improve the welfare conditions of pigs at farms.
