Istituto G. Caporale in South Africa

On 27 and 28 November 2012, Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e Molise G. Caporale participated in the "Consultative workshop: possibilities for broadening access to international & regional markets for Southern Africa's livestock producers", held in the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

The workshop involved representatives from the main food producer associations and competent authorities of countries in southern Africa. Its aim was to inform participants about new developments in the food sector, particularly with respect to international trade standards and legislation, in order to facilitate the development of strategies to boost access to new markets.

Dr. Alberto Mancuso, the Institute's veterinary manager, was invited to speak on the rules governing the international food trade and European legislation in this area. He also presented a talk on the "Practicalities of integrating HACCP & commodity-based trade in value chain management of biological risks associated with trade": an innovative approach to the problems connected with the trade of products of animal origin involving the application of HACCP principles to manage risks related to both food safety and animal health.

The workshop provided an important opportunity for discussion among the main stakeholders concerned in international trade and the specific problems to be faced in southern Africa.
