International activities

To face the occurrence of emerging and re-emerging Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) is necessary to build effective networks between labs and research institutes of affected countries. The success of prevention and/or control activities of these diseases lies in the capacity to implement and enforce consistent actions throughout the infected or at risk zone, regardless of political boundaries of the countries involved, and therefore pursuing supranational or regional strategies. CESME is actively involved in developing networks of laboratories and research institutes in the Mediterranean Basin, the Balkans, Latin America and Southern Africa. Collaborations are managed through training and research in the field of risk analysis and animal health, but also focusing on the management of animal registration and identification systems.

CESME is also involved in: networking with international Reference Laboratories for different diseases, OIE planned and scheduled activities, providing advice to update specific chapters of the Manual of Standards for Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines and the International Animal Health Code, carrying out institutional duties as OIE Reference Laboratory for CBPP, BT and WND.

Role as National Reference Centre

To promote and ensure the harmonization of diagnostic methods, CESME provides technical training to the personnel of other national laboratories (IIZZSS) and organizes ring trials on regular basis. In the field of emergency management, epidemiological surveillance, exotic diseases and risk analysis, CESME organizes training activities and refresher courses for National Health Services staff either through residential courses and distance learning.
