Training course on animal welfare during culling for the control of animal diseases

 

From the 8th to the 11th of April 2014, the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” (IZSAM) is organizing a training course on animal welfare during culling for the control of animal diseases, which will be held at the convention center of the Hotel Evenia Olympic in Lloret de Mar (Spain).

 

The event is part of the initiative “Better Training for Safer Food” promoted by the Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) of the European Commission and is financed by the Consumers, Health and Food Executive Agency (CHAFEA).

 

For over 30 years the European Commission has been legislating on animal welfare matters and has supported the development of legislation by taking part in international initiatives organized by the Council of Europe and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The training course in the field of animal health is considered a key instrument for the implementation of better practices and for the compliance with both Community and International law.

 

The course will involve 60 participants coming from Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany , Greece, Italy, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, Namibia, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, the UK, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, The-Former-Yugoslav-Republic –of-Macedonia, Turkey, Hungary.

 

According to the agenda of the course, the presentations will be held by teachers from different EU countries, delegates of the Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) of the European Commission and of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The reports will focus on the interpretation and application of the European legislation on animal welfare (Regulation EC N. 1099/2009). Moreover, the different kinds of methods, which are used to stun animals of different species, as well as the measures used for the prevention and management of epidemic emergencies, will be illustrated. Finally, a more practical approach will be given through group discussions, exercises and fieldwork.
