African Swine Fever in wild boars: an infected area between Piedmont and Liguria regions

After the meeting of the Central Crisis Unit, the Ministry of Health (DGSAF) has issued the executive plan establishing the area infected with African Swine Fever (ASF).

 

A task force has been implemented in Lombardy to prevent the movement of wild boars.

 

The establishment of the infected area follows the provision of the European Commission on Italy and the meetings of national experts organized by the Ministry of Health.

 

The managerial plan method issued yesterday by the General Directorate of Animal Health establishes an area with a strict surveillance; the area is between the Piedmont and Liguria regions and it particularly affects the provinces of Alessandria and Genoa.

 

146 municipalities have been identified, by the Ministry of Health, as "infected area" by ASF.

 

 

 

Central Crisis Unit - In the meeting of 10 January 2022, the Central Crisis Unit (CCU) took into account the epidemiological assessment carried out by the DGSAF Group of Experts for the definition of the areas to be subjected to the measures provided for by European legislation in the light of the three cases of ASF, so far, confirmed by the National Reference Center for swine fever (CEREP): the first case dates back to 1 January 2022 and it  a wild boar carcass in Ovada (Alessandria); the other two cases were confirmed in as many carcasses in the municipality of Fraconalto (Alessandria) and in Liguria at Isola del Cantone (Genoa).

 

 

 

Additional special measures Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/605 establishes the application of special control measures for African swine fever in addition to those applicable under Articles 21 (1) (Establishment of a restricted zone) and 63 (Measures in the event of an outbreak of a category A disease in wild animals of the listed species) of  Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687 . These additional measures are applicable to indoor domestic pigs and wild animals and to products obtained from pigs, for a limited period, in the further limited and infected protection and surveillance zones established by the Member State.

 

 

 

ASF Plan 2022 to the EU - The new surveillance and prevention plan (2022) in Italy for African Swine Fever has been sent to the European Commission for approval. Meanwhile, with the Implementation Decision of 10 January, the European Commission blocked 

movements from infected areas outside the national borders.
