Focolaio di Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Russia

Since 2015 Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) outbreaks engaged many southeast European territories causing a lot of trouble at European Commission and Member States.

A new alarm for the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV) in the Balkans and Eastern Europe comes forward: the veterinary authorities of Russian Federation in 09/06/2017 notified one case of LSD in a herd located in province of Altata, Dergachevsky, Saratovskaya Oblast (Figure 1).

In the herd there are 12 cattle but to date only the positive animal was slaughtered and the animal trade is prohibited to and from the herd.

The causes of the disease introduction in herd are unknown.

The sanitary measures put in place were:

  • the control of animal movement within the country
  • the application of a vaccination plan around the outbreak
  • the quarantine period of all new animal entries
  • the Official disposal of carcasses, related products and waste coming from the outbreak territories
  • disinfection and disinfestation strategies (fight against vectors).
