European day of antibiotic resistance

In Italy, in 2018, the percentages of resistance to the main classes of antibiotics for the eight pathogens under surveillance (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa e Acinetobacter species) remain higher compared to the mean values observed in the other European countries, even in the framework of a declining trend showed in the recent years.

Furthermore, more than 2,000 cases of infections diagnosed in 2018 caused by enterobacteria producing carbapenemase-(CPE), or enzymes destroying carbapenems (a class of highly effective antibiotic agents commonly used for the treatment of severe or high-risk bacterial infections) highlight the severe impact of such resistant bacteria in our country.

These are the updated data published by the Italian Institute of Health on the remit of the European Antibiotic Awareness Day (18 November 2019) and of the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (18-24 November 2019). These events were promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the National surveillance of antibiotic resistance (AR-ISS) and of the surveillance of CPE and coordinated by the Italian Istituto Superiore di Sanità.

Our country is implementing the National Antibiotic-Resistance Contrast Plan (PNCAR) 2017-2020, which deals with the problem following a "One Health" strategy with monitoring, surveillance and contrast actions of the antibiotic-resistance phenomenon in the human and veterinary sector, in line with the plans of international agencies.

Everyone can help fight the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance through the responsible use of these fundamental drugs.
