Animal welfare during long journey transports

The project “Development of EU wide animal transport certification system and renovation of Control Posts in the European Union” concerning animal welfare during long journey transport has been successfully concluded.

The project has been entrusted by the DG SANTE of the European Commission to a European Consortium led by CRPA Spa. IZSAM is partner of this Consortium. The project lasted 36 months; its products and outputs are currently under evaluation.

IZSAM played a key role both in the research on animal welfare during transport and the knowledge building and management strategy. New collaborative learning models, based on web platforms, and guidelines to increase animal welfare protection addressed to the operators of the sectors have been defined and tested.

Information about the project and its main results are available in the dedicated website in English, French and German; a short description of the initiative is also available in Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Romanian and Polish.

Under the "Journal" section of this web site, all the Newsletters periodically published from the starting to the end of the project are available. In the conclusive number (Newsletter n. 7) main information on the project results are described.  sono disponibili tutte le Newsletter pubblicate con cadenza periodica dall’avvio alla conclusione del progetto.

According to the EC Regulation N. 1/2005, official Control Posts have the function to protect animal health and welfare, in the hours of stop/resting during transport, through specific protection measures. To this end, the project favoured the rebuilding and renovation of four Control Posts located at the crossroads of important flows of animals, in four EU Member States (Poland, Hungary, Greece, and France) and promoted the development of a quality certification system for transporters of animals operating over long journeys (more than 8 hours). The certification system, based on the scientific information and the data collected during the assessments and the infield analysis implemented during the project, was defined in consistency with the certification scheme for Control Posts, developed in the framework of the previous DG SANCO funded project titled “Renovation and promoting high quality control posts in the European Union”.

The consortium of partners and the other collaborations developed with third parties, guaranteed a broad geographical coverage over ten countries: Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Greece, Denmark and Hungary.
