The Institute in Kenya for Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP)

From April the 25th to May the 11th, 2012, a delegation of the G. Caporale Institute visited one of the most important research laboratories in Africa, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) of Nairobi, Kenya.

Doctors Flavio Sacchini and Ivanka Krastevasi conducted some research activities on Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), a disease for which the G. Caporale Institute has been an OIE Reference Laboratory since 1993. For some years now, also thanks to the Italian Ministry of Health, the G. Caporale Institute has established collaboration ties with the international CBPP research group based at ILRI and coordinated by Dr. Joerg Jores.

These joint research activities aim to identify antigens targeted by Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides responsible for the disease. The goal is to develop new diagnostic techniques and relevant vaccines, necessary to control the disease throughout the African territory. CBPP is considered one of the most important veterinary priorities with respect to cattle breeding in Africa.
