A British man, resident in UK, died after contracting rabies while visiting Morocco. The man was infected with the disease after being bitten by a cat, Public Health England (PHE) said. Unfortunately, the man was not vaccinated before the accident and the post-exposure treatment was applied too late.

PHE also reassured that the health workers and those in close contact with the deceased were being assessed and vaccinated where necessary. Moreover, it guaranteed that there was no wider risk.

Rabies disease does not circulate in either wild or domestic animals in the UK, although some species of bats can carry a rabies-like virus.

PHE said the event was a reminder to travellers to rabies-affected countries to avoid contact with dogs, cats and other animals wherever possible, and seek support about the need for a rabies vaccine prior to travel.
